Sustainable Project in the Riviera Maya

Have you ever wondered where the water

you drink at our park comes from?

Within the natural beauty, recreational activities and the incredible flora and fauna that we find in Xel-Há, there is also an interesting and important aspect of the park that makes it not only beautiful, but also socially responsible. There are two different processes utilized in Xel-Há to generate both the drinking water and the water used for the plant species.

Our tour guides and experts, Engineer Jose Castro in the maintenance area and Engineer Jose Luis Amendola, charged with the oversight of four of the treatment plants in the Park, showed us a brief tour of each of the processes that are employed for the water to be used.

They explained there are 2 different types of water with 2 different processes:

  • Water extraction (drinkable)
  • Wastewater treatment (sanitation)

1. The water from the wells is passed through the process of osmosis that are in containers.

2. Everything is monitored accurately in the water treatment plant.

The first case—water extraction—involves extracting water from wells, which later pass through two filtration systems. The slight filtered water will be used for bathrooms, showers, sinks, etc. The water that passes through a second filtered system and “osmosis” is used for human consumption.

  • With this process, just in 2011 alone, 47.289 m3 of water was treated.

3. The water for common use has only low filtration.
4. The treated water carries a fuller osmosis process.

 

Wastewater Treatment

The water used for irrigation goes through a completely different process called “aerobe”, meaning microorganism that require oxygen to live are injected into waste water containers. The organisms help clean out the water of solid matter, and then the water passes through other filters and components that leave the water clean and ready for reuse.

  • With this treatment, in 2011 alone, 40.307 m3 of wastewater was treated and reused.

Combined—the water extraction and wastewater treatment—are the added benefit of self-sustainability.
